How to Delete or Deactivate an Instagram Account

Updated September 8, 2026 · By Ryan Bold

Deleting the Instagram app does not delete your Instagram account. If you want a break, temporary deactivation and permanent deletion are different choices. Decide which outcome you want before confirming anything in Accounts Center.

Choose the outcome

Action What it means
Uninstall the app Removes the app from that device. Your account remains.
Deactivate the account Temporarily hides the account; intended for a break rather than permanent removal.
Delete the account Requests permanent removal. Read the confirmation screen’s timing and cancellation conditions before proceeding.

Meta’s official deletion and deactivation help covers phone and computer access. Some help pages require sign-in or vary by region. The options and deadline shown for your own account take precedence over screenshots from an older app version.

Prepare before opening the deletion screen

  • Confirm the exact username. Accounts Center may contain more than one Instagram profile and a Facebook account.
  • Use Instagram’s information export tools if you want a copy of photos, posts or other available account information. Download and open the export before deleting the account.
  • Check whether you use this account to manage a business presence or access another service. Arrange an appropriate alternative first.
  • Make sure you can authenticate. A forgotten password is an account-recovery problem, not something a third-party deletion service can safely solve.

Find the account control

Open Instagram’s profile menu and settings, then Accounts Center. Look for the account ownership/control section and its Deactivation or deletion option; it has commonly appeared under Personal details. Select the intended Instagram profile, then choose the action you actually want. Follow the prompts, including authentication and the final confirmation.

If those labels do not appear in your version, use the help linked above from Instagram’s own settings. Do not assume Android users must borrow an iPhone: account management is available through supported phone and computer routes. Menu placement changes more frequently than the distinction between deactivation and deletion.

Read the final screen slowly

For deletion, note the date when removal is scheduled and how cancellation works. Do not rely on a generic countdown copied from a blog: Meta’s account-specific notice is what matters. Save a private record of the confirmation without exposing recovery codes or other sensitive information.

For deactivation, understand that signing back in can reactivate the account. If your aim is simply to reduce distractions, removing the app after deactivating may make the break easier, but app removal itself is not the deactivation step.

Make a deletion record you can actually use

Before confirming, make a private note with four fields: the exact username, whether you chose deactivation or deletion, the scheduled date shown by Meta, and the location of your downloaded export. Open a photograph and a readable account-information file from that export. An email saying an export is ready is not the same as having a usable local copy.

If you manage a personal profile and a shop profile, start by opening each profile separately and matching its username to Accounts Center. Do not identify the target by profile photo alone; two profiles can use the same image. Stop if the final screen names a different profile.

After requesting deletion, avoid logging in merely to see whether the account is gone: depending on the confirmation flow, a login may offer a way to cancel. Use the instructions and deadline you recorded. A profile disappearing from public search is not proof that every backup or message held by another person has been erased.

When something goes wrong

If you selected the wrong profile, stop before confirming and return to the account selector. If the flow is unavailable, update the app or try Instagram’s official website in a current browser. If authentication fails, use Instagram’s recovery options. Never give a stranger your password or verification code in exchange for a promise to delete the account.

A useful final check is a three-item record: selected username, chosen action, and confirmation date or deadline. This is more dependable than assuming the request succeeded because the app closed.
