Google One VPN Is Gone: Check the Current Pixel VPN Instead

Updated September 8, 2026 · By Ryan Bold

If an old tutorial tells you to buy Google One and enable its VPN benefit, it is no longer a reliable setup guide. The former VPN by Google One service is no longer available. Google’s current supported-device instructions concern VPN by Google on eligible Pixel devices, which is a different starting point.

This page has been revised to help readers distinguish the old product from the current Pixel feature. Do not buy a storage subscription solely because an older article promises that it includes the retired VPN.

Check which situation applies

Your device or need Next step
Eligible Pixel phone or Pixel Tablet Check Google’s current device, account and country requirements.
Another Android phone, iPhone, Mac or Windows PC Do not follow the Pixel-only instructions. Check the VPN product actually supported on your device.
Access to an employer’s private network Use the connection and client supplied by the employer’s IT team.
Changing your apparent country The Pixel feature does not provide a country-selection switch for accessing region-restricted content.

Enable the supported Pixel feature

Google currently lists Pixel 7 and later phones and the Pixel Tablet, subject to eligibility and availability. On a supported device, open Settings → Network & internet → VPN → VPN by Google. Read the disclosures and permissions, then enable Use VPN if you agree. See Google’s current Pixel VPN instructions for the full requirements and supported countries.

After enabling it, check the VPN status in Settings. A key indicator can help confirm that a VPN is connected, but verify the provider shown rather than assuming every key icon belongs to Google.

If the option is absent or cannot connect

First identify the exact device model and software version. Check normal internet access with the VPN turned off, then review account eligibility, device updates and country availability. Managed accounts can have administrator restrictions. Rooting, an unlocked bootloader or unofficial software can also affect eligibility.

Repeatedly reinstalling Google One will not turn an unsupported device into a supported Pixel. Likewise, a VPN cannot establish its tunnel without an underlying internet connection.

Understand what the connection changes

A VPN routes traffic through another service. It does not prevent a website from recognizing an account you sign into, erase existing browser cookies or repair a compromised device. It may add latency or reduce throughput. Use a comparison on the same network to diagnose a problem, rather than treating a VPN as a guaranteed speed upgrade.

For example, if ordinary browsing works but a work application stops after the VPN connects, record the app, network and error. Check with its administrator before excluding its traffic. An exclusion changes which connection protects that application.

Separate an eligibility problem from a network problem

Observation Next useful check
The VPN option is missing Check the exact Pixel model, account type, software and supported country in Google’s eligibility list.
The option exists, but ordinary internet access also fails Resolve the underlying Wi-Fi or mobile-data problem first.
The VPN connects, but one service fails Record that service and its error. Compare the same task with the VPN off; do not change several network settings together.
A hotel or cafe network needs a sign-in page Complete the network’s legitimate connection process before checking VPN status again.

A useful support note is short: device model, Android version, country, Wi-Fi or mobile data, VPN status and one failing task. Leave out your public IP and account details unless official support specifically needs them. This information helps distinguish an unavailable benefit from a working tunnel that a particular service does not accept.

Remove an obsolete setup carefully

If an old VPN by Google One app or profile remains, identify it by name before removing it through the device’s normal app or VPN settings. Do not delete a company-managed profile or an unrelated provider’s configuration. Recheck ordinary browsing afterwards. For Windows routing checks, see our Ethernet and Wi-Fi guide.
